SILENT PRAYER
Clément Himbert (saxophone, France), Ka Bo Chan (counter-tenor, Hong Kong), Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, conductor Andres Mustonen
Kancheli, Glazunov, Vähi, Uusberg (première), Mortazavi

GlasperlenspielSinf2013It has become a tradition that the summer festival Glasperlenspiel is opened by sinfonietta named after the festival. This year’s opening concert will be given extra colours by a French saxophonist Clément Himbert and an Iranian composer Reza Mortazavi, also attending a performance of his work. Certainly, one of the highlights is the première of Pärt Uusberg’s work commissioned by the festival. The focal point is Giya Kancheli’s Silent Prayer dedicated to the 60th birthday of Gidon Kremer and the 80th birthday of Mstislav Rostropovich.

Andres Mustonen (b 1953)  is partly a solo violinist, but mostly a conductor, whereas the latter post has been developed via a career of a performing artist and musician. Mustonen conducts the leading orchestras of Finland, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia and Lithuania, Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi, the Great Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio, the Russian National Academic Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonietta Rīga, the Musica Viva Academic Chamber Orchestra, the Bayerische Rundfunken, the Helsinki City Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, etc. During many years, Andres Mustonen has worked together with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, also with Estonian National Opera.
MozartMustonenMustonen has gone through and performed the music history both as a performer and a conductor. He transfers his musical experience of history to performances of classical, romantic and new music. This is but not the new music that infatuated young Mustonen in the early 1960s, when his interest lay in the avant-garde and the happening. It is the harmonic new music created by გია ყანჩელი (Giya Kancheli), Philip Glass, 武満 徹 (Takemitsu Tōru), Владимир Мартынов (Vladimir Martynov), Ավետ Տերտերյան (Avet Terterian), and Валентин Сильвестров (Valentin Silvestrov). Several composers have dedicated their work to him. Mustonen is in close creative contact with many Estonian composers − Arvo Pärt, Peeter Vähi and Galina Grigorieva − also giving premières of their new works.
Making music, Mustonen can be characterised by spontaneity, improvisation and radiant performance. “For me an orchestra is not a static form but a living organisation of musicians, one whose members enhance and affect each other.”
Mustonen’s repertoire includes pieces of early music as well as of new music, which he often premières. He places a special significance on religious oratory masterpieces from Baroque to the modern day: Bach, Mozart, Bruckner, Penderecki, Tavener, Knaifel.
In time, Andres Mustonen has developed a wide circle of musician friends with whom he makes music: Natalia Gutman, Alexei Lubimov, Michel Lethiec, Inesa Galante, Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Pascal Gallois, Seppo Kimanen, Jaakko Ryhänen, Maacha Deubner, Monica Groop, Patrick Gallois, Michala Petri, Sergei Stadler, Oleg Kagan, Viktor Tretiakov, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Ivan Monighetti, Eliso Virsaladze, and others.

MICROCOSM
Avarus Ensemble
Rajandi (première)

Avarus Ensemble: Kadri Voorand (vocal), Tarmo Johannes (flutes), Meelis Vind (clarinets), Virgo Sillamaa (guitar), Aleksandra Kremenetski (vibraphone, marimba, percussion), Kirke Karja (piano), Egert Leinsaar (violin), Johanna Randvere (cello), Mingo Rajandi (double bass), Haar Tammik (sound)

AvarusEnsemble

Avarus Ensemble exceeds the limits of a traditional chamber ensemble by its size, stylistic range as well as power. It is a crossover of its kind − the classical instruments are supplemented by elements from rock and jazz and a well-known jazz singer Kadri Voorand. Nevertheless, the result is all but tasteless or eclectic, quite the contrary − an individual and homogenous style is created. They will premier Mingo Rajandi’s “Microcosm” (lyrics by Ilmar Laaban) which is a sort of mantra or prayer where reality, irreality and dream world will meet. A “Mediaeval dimension” is added by the venue − the ruins of Dome church.

Baltic Baroque (Russia / Estonia)

BalticBaroque165

Ensemble Baltic Baroque on period instruments: Maria Krestinskaya (baroque violin), Evegeny Sviridov (baroque violin), Sofia Maltizova (baroque cello), Imbi Tarum (harpsichord), Grigori Maltizov (artistic director)

Press releases about the Vivaldi interpretations by Baltic Baroque:
... very much enjoyed these interpretations. In particular Maria Krestinskaya and Evegeny Sviridov deliver high-spirited performances... (musica Dei donum, 2013)
(Ouverture. Das Klassik-Blog, 2013)
... enjoyable and stylish performances... For complete-ists, this is a must, as well as for all Vivaldi sonata players. (Early Music Review, 2013)
Very strongly recommended for notes, performances, recorded sound, and the general interest all these create together; obligatory for Vivaldi specialists. (Fanfare)
Not only is this music worthwhile, the performances are also outstanding. The capriccio with variations from the Sonata /.../ is one of the highlights. ... an exciting performance. (musica Dei donum, 2014)
... buoyant, sweetly sinewy, punchily detailed and perfectly matched... Yet four of these in a row might be a little too much, and it is a relief to the ear when Imbi Tarum’s harpsichord joins them, adding a touch of weight and depth to the sound. Thoroughly Vivaldian, in other words. (Gramophone, 2014)
... very seldom performed and recorded... It is delightful stuff and should appeal to violinists looking for something different. Any lover of the baroque violin and / or Vivaldi’s music should consider adding this disc to his collection, especially since the three artists come up with excellent interpretations. (musica Dei donum, 2014)
(Pizzicato, 2014)

SYMPHO-RAVE WITH “KAERA-JAAN”
DJ Nrike (percussion, Cuba)

Sympho-Rave with “Kaera-Jaan” (in Estonian ‘Oats-John’) is probably not a standard repertoire for the Glasperlenspiel, but fits perfectly into the joint entertainment program with the Tartu Hanseatic Days. The Cuban DJ Nrike is internationally best known for his Latino music events, but this time at the Glasperlenspiel he will be challenging classics-symphonics, among whom one might encounter Beethoven, Vivaldi, Verdi and Ravel, and maybe even find a common language with Arvo Pärt and the rhythms of Cuba. Come and listen and enjoy the music or take a step further and dance Kaera-Jaan, and not only that...

CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL CONTRA JOHANN SEBASTIAN
Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra (Lithuania), Linas Valickas (violin), Aidas Strimaitis (violin Mindaugas Bačkus (cello, artistic director)

Carl Philipp Emanuel contra Johann Sebastian − obviously the Bachs, the son and the father. Recently, the 300th anniversary of the junior and the 330th of the senior were celebrated. Though the age difference is not that great, less than 30 years, it marks the border of cultural epochs. Like in history we speak of the time Before and After Christ, music is regarded as before and after (J.S.) Bach. Though the father and the son were not on hostile terms, the word “contra” is musicologically more than justified.

Mauricio Kagel (1931−2008): Exotica for 6 singing instruments with 60 or more non-European instruments (1971−1972). Dedicated to the sisth sense.
Exotica was a commission for the 20th Olympic Games in Munich, 1972. The first performance took place under the direction of Mauricio Kagel, and the instrumentalists included such wellknown new music personalities as Vinko Globokar, Siegfried Palm, Christoph Caskel and Michel Portal. The six participants had to “manhandle” around 200 wind, string and percussion instruments unknown in Europe. Werner Klüppelholz’s program notes make the composer's intention clear: he wanted to question “the dominance of Western music or culture” or “go back to the primeval origins of music-making, when singing was still at one with making sound out of simple, everyday objects”.

LauraRemmel400 MariaPeterson400

The same concert premieres a work by Märt-Matis Lill When the Stones Were Soft (comissioned by the Glasprlenspiel) enhanced by then participation of an actress Maria Peterson and a singer Laura Remmel as well as a video installation.

LA FLUTE À TRAVERS LE VIOLON
Quartet Stefano Parrino (flute, Italy) - Francesco Parrino (violin, Italy) - Anna-Liisa Bezrodny (violin) - Imbi Tarum (harpsichord)
Barbarossa, Campagnoli, Lourié, Rolla, Donatoni

As a “rule” the Glasperlenspiel festival tries to invite new performers every year, with only some exceptions. However, Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and Imbi Tarum being top-class musicians, are on our festival scene already for the third time. This time they will form a quartet with an Italian flute and violin duo Stefano & Francesco Parrino.
The program presents works for flute and violin(s) written in the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st cent. As the titles of Lourié’s and Donatoni’s modernist compositions suggest (The Flute through the Violin and Edge), in sharing the same register, the two soprano instruments act as musical alter egos. Facing each other, they are engaged in a dialectics of identity, a competitive-collaborative relationship that also characterises the classical and romantic pieces by Campagnoli and Rolla, two forerunners of Paganini, as well as the contemporary work by Antonella Barbarossa.

AnnaLiisaBezrodny350  FrancescoAndStefanoParrino

Francesco Parrino began his musical activities at an early age − when the great guitarist Alirio Diaz recognized him as a “brilliant promise of the Italian art of violin playing” and encouraged him to pursue a musical career.
Francesco obtained the diplomas in violin at the Milan Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Utrecht, Royal Academy of Music, London, and Royal Holloway College, University of London.
He has won awards in several national and international competitions. Both as a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in important concert halls in Austria, Chile, Colombia, the UK, France, Italy, Peru, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Turkey.
As a soloist, he collaborated with the orchestras of Aarad, Catanzaro, Kosice, the Turin Philharmonic, the Armonici and Stesichoros chamber orchestras. He premiered violin works by Marco Betta, Paolo Furlani and Ennio Morricone.
Francesco is also interested in musicological research. His main areas of research are 19th and 20th century Italian music, and the aesthetics and ideologies of musical performance. He has contributed papers to seminars and international conferences held by the Universities of Cambridge, London, Oxford and York as well as by the American Musicological Society, and has written articles for American, Austrian and Italian periodicals. He plays on 2 beautiful violins: a Gaetano Gadda, and a Giuseppe & Antonio Gagliano (ca 1790−1805) that he has been generously lent by the heirs of the great conductor Gino Marinuzzi. He owns 2 precious bows: a Benoit Rolland and a Eugène Sartory he was given by an anonymous admirer.

Stefano Parrino obtained diplomas from the most important European music schools (Milan, Geneva, London, Paris, and Lugano), with teachers like Peter-Lukas Graf, Maxence Larrieu, Patrick Gallois and William Bennett. Stefano dedicates himself to performing in concerts both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He has performed in Europe, North and South America, and been praised by audiences and critics.
As a soloist, he has collaborated with the chamber orchestras Gli Armonici, Stesichoros and the Royal Academy of Music’s Symphonia Orchestra of London. As a soloist, he has also played live on Radio RSI with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana of Lugano, and on RAI (both radio and TV) with the Orchestra Sinfonica Arturo Toscanini. In St Petersburg he has performed Mercadante’s Concerto with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, while in Palermo he has played Khachaturian’s Concerto with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana. As a chamber musician, he is mainly active as a founding member of the Trio Albatros Ensemble, but has also collaborated with distinguished musicians such as Stephen Burns, Patrick Gallois, Peter-Lukas Graf, and  Vladimir Mendelssohn.
He has given master classes in all of Europe, South and North America, both in the flute and in continuous respiration, a technique for which Stefano is an internationally recognised researcher and populariser.

ALBERT SCHWEITZER
Andres Uibo (organ), Aare Tammesalu (cello)
Bach

The world celebrates 140 years from Albert Schweitzer’s birth and 50 years from his death. A Nobel Prize Laureate, a humanitarian, a philosopher, a physician, a friend of Africans, an organist, the author of the most comprehensive study on Bach − seems like too much for one man... Andres Uibo performs Bach from Schweitzer’s repertoire. Fragments from Schweitzer’s recording of Bach from 1928 will add an extra dimension to the concert.

PHILIPS SYMFONIE ORKEST (Holland, in co-operation with Järvi Academy)
Conductor Maestro Neeme Järvi and his student(s)
Van Oosten, Stravinski, Mahler

PhilipsSymfonieOrkestPhilips Symfonie Orkest with their large staff will barely have enough space to perform at Tartu St John’s Church. The music of Stravinski’s Fire Bird and Mahler’s Symphony No 5 will fill the church space to the brim. Many orchestras and ensembles would give a lot to perform under the name and sponsorship of the world's biggest electronics company, but the honor has been given to only one − the reason being their high artistic level.

NeemeJarviSimonVanBoxtenThe head of a musical dynasty, Neeme Järvi is one of today’s most highly respected maestros. He conducts the world’s most prominent orchestras and works alongside soloists of the highest calibre. A prolific recording artist, he has amassed a discography of nearly 500 recordings.
Over his long and highly successful career he has held positions with orchestras across the world. Last season he took up his tenure as Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He is also currently Artistic Director of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Emeritus of both the Residentie Orkest Netherland Hague and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He also holds the titles of Principal Conductor Emeritus of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
Highlights of an impressive discography include critically acclaimed complete symphony cycles of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Dvořak, Glazunov, Grieg, Sibelius, Nielsen and Brahms. Järvi has also championed less widely known composers such as Wilhelm Stenhammar, Hugo Alfvén and Niels Gade, Franz Berwald, Johann Svendsen and Johann Halvorsen of Norway and composers from his native Estonia, including Rudolf Tobias, Artur Kapp and Eduard Tubin. Throughout his career he has recorded with Chandos, Deutsche Grammophon, BIS and EMI amongst others.
